    Tsikamutanda convicted of extortion in Chivi

    CHIVI
    - A notorious traditional healer (tsikamutanda) has been convicted for extorting US$500 from a villager after conducting a cleansing ceremony at his home without his consent.
    Ernest Mukanga of Mherenyoka Village under Chief Kazangarare, Hurungwe who is a traditional healer appeared before Chivi resident magistrate Bishard Chineka charged with extortion last week.
    He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months in prison, five months were suspended for five years and seven were suspended on condition he performs 245 hours of community service at Chivi Clinic.
    It is the State case that on December 23, 2015, the accused went to Bornface Tapera (56) of Mukosi Resettlement in Village 10 for witch-hunting.
    When he got to Tapera's homestead, the accused told him that he had no issues with him, but his homestead needed cleansing because somebody had bewitched it.
    The court heard that the complainant refused the offer, but Mukanga threatened to come back and cleanse his homestead.
    Tapera told the accused that he would look for a traditional of his choice to do the cleansing but Mukanga would have non-of it as he came back a few days later and proceeded to conduct the cleansing ceremony without the complainant's consent and demanded US$500. After being threatened, Tapera paid one beast and cash amounting to US$24 which was recovered.
