MASVINGO - One of the most decorated darts players has been selected the inaugural Masvingo Police Sportsperson Of The Year at a colourful belated end of year Christmas party held at Phoenix camp last Saturday. The ceremony was attended by hundreds of senior officials from the province and business people.
Masvingo Provincial Intelligence Officer Superintended Charles John was voted the 2015 Sports Person of The Year for the province for his outstanding darts playing skills and for his efforts he walked away with a shield, two plate gas stove and 9kg gas cylinder.
Sup John who is also the captain of the Snipers Darts team led Masvingo Province Darts team to fourth position out of the 17 Police Provinces that took part in the 2015 Commissioner General after topping the province in the PROPOL.
He was one of Zimbabwe's representatives at the 2015 at the Southern Africa Region Police Chiefs Corporation (SARPCC) games in Swaziland as the best rated player and scooped a silver medal for the country.
Sup John has a total of 9 medals 11 trophies and shields in his playing career, he was once the number one darts player in the national rankings in 2010 and scored the most 180s.
He is also the organizing secretary of the Masvingo Darts Association (MDA) where he has initiated a turnaround strategy which has the sport being run on professional basis.
"When I joined the MDA they used to just play the game without following the proper rules, I was made the organizing secretary and so far I have managed to bring some level of professionalism in the game and I am happy that things are now flowing," he said.
Sup John lamented the lack of support and sponsorship from the business community and the general public which is retarding the development of the sport.
"Right now our major problem is lack of sponsorship and support from the community which is hindering the growth of the sport in the province, we are failing to fulfil the national darts association of Zimbabwe fixtures because of lack of funding," he said.
Sup John also added that there is need to move darts from the bars and night clubs and take the sport to the people making it a family sport where even church pastors and children can attend and play.
Meanwhile, Sup John revealed that the 2016 MDA league will begin at the end of February in order to give sufficient time to players to practice in preparation for the Easter games to be staged in Gweru as they wish to get sponsorship to participate. sport
