    – Zvapano Munganasa who was an acting town clerk for Masvingo City Council faces a mandatory five-year jail sentence after he was arrested by Police this week for perjury or lying under oath, The Mirror has established.
Munganasa was picked from his offices at the Civic Centre by the Police at around 12pm on Monday and a docket RRB 2683952 has been opened against him. Police sources told The Mirror that he could be locked in anytime once preliminary investigations on the matter are completed.
Lying under oath is a serious criminal offence under the law.
Police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula was said to be in meetings in Bikita and could not comment.
The case emanates from an interpleader where Munganasa signed an affidavit claiming that several properties attached at Masvingo Drama Circle were not Drama Circle properties but were properties that belonged to the City Council.
Munganasa who was acting town clerk in June last year did this in
an attempt to save Masvingo Drama
    Circle's property from the hammer.
The Mirror investigations showed that Munganasa's son Charles Munganasa is a Vice Chairman at Masvingo Drama Circle.
Charles said he would call back The Mirror but did not.
The auction is a result of a labour lawsuit made against the Drama Circle's by its former director Leeroy Gono.
However, a hearing at the High Court last week proved that Munganasa was lying under oath as Gono produced receipts to show that the properties were indeed Drama Circle properties and Masvingo City Council has by any stretch of imagination no claim to the property.
Munganasa was reported to the Police for perjury soon after the High Court declared that his affidavit was a pack of lies.
The Mirror understands that Munganasa would soon be detained by the Police and chances are he would be appearing in court on Monday. The Mirror also understands that the matter will be heard at the regional court because of the serious nature of the crime.
What should however, concern residents is the manner in which council is spending thousands of dollars of their hard-earned cash on countless court cases and frivolous projects. The High Court has in the same ruling ordered the City Council to pay Gono's legal costs on a client scale basis.
The City Council will also pay the Sheriff's lawyer, Kantor and Immerman for legal fees. Sources said that Kantor and Gono are not going to claim anything less than $5 000 each from Masvingo City Council.
Meanwhile, Drama Circle property will now be auctioned, according to the High Court ruling.news
