Zaka RDC workers go for 3 months without salaries

    Chiredzi Bureau

Zaka – There is an outcry at Zaka Rural District Council after employees failed to get their salaries since August this year.
Zaka RDC Chairman, Sebastian Musundire confirmed the salary backlog and cited two reasons including a debt created with Zinara after Zimra garnished funds released to council by the road authority.
He said council places high priority on the workers' welfare but the local authority's coffers were currently dry. He said corrective measures were being taken to ensure that the workers who are owed more than three months salaries are paid.
Musundire said a big debt was created when ZIMRA garnished an account that held funds channelled to council by Zinara for the maintenance of roads.
"We are currently paying back a debt to Zinara created when Zimra garnished funds that we received from the road authority for the maintenance of our road network.
"Zinara has stopped funding our projects until we fully reimburse that money and we have not been able to get money for road maintenance since the garnish," said Musundire.
He said that the second reason for failure to pay workers was that revenue had generally gone down.
Workers who spoke to The Mirror on condition of anonymity however, said management prioritised debts repayment ahead of staff salaries. They said that Zaka RDC had the lowest debt in the province compared to other local authorities and all the money received is used to pay off debts.news
